GIVING YOUR ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM A BATH Registry cleanup tools. There are a variety of tools available. Basically these tools look at the entries in your registry and try to correlate them with installed software. Many times in the process of installing/uninstalling software, a lot of extraneous junk is left around in the registry. I have been using Microsoft's version. This version is 4.1a, and is available from many places, except not from Microsoft! There is actually a statement on one of their articles (do a search on regclean): "The RegClean utility is no longer supported and has been removed from all Microsoft download sites." The best registry cleaner available seems to be this one. This authored by another guy in Finland! Go into tools -> registry cleanup -> do them all. This will find all the extraneous entries in the registry. A single backup file is saved by default. If something doesn't work, you can run regcleaner again and restore the backup. I am amazed every time I run this on my Win2K how much faster my startup is because of all the extraneous stuff that gets put in the registry. As of Aug 2003, the above registry cleaner has been acquired by www.macecraft.com - or the author incorporated and went into business. It is still a great tool. Click on the download button. There is a free 30 day trial download, with no restrictions. And it is worth paying the $30 for. Every time I use it on my Win2K machine, the startup time seems to decrease by orders of magnitude. Here is a good registry cleaner I have used recently, and free. Beware tho..... It will clean out absolutely every temporary file or history in your entire PC. Here is a good review - Feb 2007 |
