HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT..... In spite of its seemingly lackadaisical description, "best effort" is a specific term that has been used in the technical community for many years, especially wrt the ATM and FR standards, and probably further back than that. The techs and the lawyers and the marketing types may not know the history of it, but it has specific meaning. We are all on what looks like a LAN beyond the CO, and we all fight for the bandwidth someplace in the food chain. None of us has "guaranteed bandwidth" through the network clouds yet. THAT costs money. None of us really want to pay for guaranteed bandwidth - get a DS1 if you want that. We are all on "best effort" service. So it has both specific and lackadaisical meaning... |
